Dear Miss Paws: My dog has been sleeping more than usual and I was wondering if there is a definitive way to tell if my dog is sick and should be seen by a veterinarian? A. Since dogs can’t verbally tell us if they have a problem, as you alluded to in your question the behavior and body language is usually all pet owners have to rely on in making that decision. One of the tried and true symptoms is an unusually warm and dry nose which typically indicates that the dog has a fever. Sleeping excessively or limping usually indicates some level of pain, however severe pain is more obvious. A dog in a great deal of pain may cry, collapse, hide, growl, snap or pant excessively. Other times, if ill, a dog may show little interest in eating and a dog may change his habits, personality, social behavior or activity level. If you think your dog may have a digestive problem, try giving him cooked rice. Rice may sometimes settle a dog’s stomach. If you are concerned or simply in doubt, by all means take your dog to see your veterinarian to be sure. |
